What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative Medicine is the practice of healing that has defined what previously was known as Alternative and Complementary Medicine. A study released in the early 1990's found 1 in 3 Americans admitted to using other forms of treatment aside from what their doctor prescribed. This was the hallmark of the change that is strong and continuing to grow today in a large portion of US hospitals. Physicians in practice can apply for a 2 year fellowship in the US to train with the University of Arizona, Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. The doctors that graduate practice a form of medicine that combines the information used in Western Medicine and judiciously allow the weaving of evidence based therapies found in the more alternative and complementary field. Such treatments can be found in Traditional Chinese Medicine/acupuncture and Ayurvedic Medicine/yoga or mind body therapies. Many of the treatments used have been studied by governing bodies like the National Institute of Health; ongoing studies continue in major research institutions to justify safe and effective practices.
